Trump begins the first full week of December with a number of important positions still to be filled, and the president-elect is said to be widening his options for the top diplomatic position in the US.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Tillerson is scheduled to meet with Trump this week in order to discuss the prospect of being appointed to the position.
Other new potential candidates include Democrat senator Joe Manchin and Republican representative from California Dana Rohrabacher.
One of Trump's senior transition team Kellyanne Conway confirmed on Sunday that he had "broadened the search".
"He's very fortunate to have interest among serious men and women who, all of whom need to understand that their first responsibility as secretary of state would be to implement and adhere to the president-elect's America First foreign policy, if you will, his view of the world," Conway said.
A number of frontrunners for the role are unlikely to be impressed with the widening of the search, including the likes of Mitt Romney and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Tillerson joined the oil company in 1975, rising to lead the company which operates in over 50 countries. As Exxon CEO he has forged relationships with various world leaders, including Russia's Vladimir Putin.
