UK businesses urge tougher climate action in letter to David Cameron
Some of the biggest UK businesses have sent a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron urging to take more action on climate change.
Eighty British companies including BT, Tesco, Diego, John Lewis and Aviva, urged the Prime Minister to seek a strong global climate deal in Paris in December, which limits the world temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius.
The letter, published by the Financial Times, said: "We are some of the businesses that will help to create the UK’s future economy. We want this economy to be energy efficient and low carbon."
The companies noted that the failure to cut carbon emissions could put economic prosperity at risk, but the right action could create jobs and boost competitiveness.
WWF-UK chief executive David Nussbaum said: "As we approach international climate talks, Britain should be a global champion for change, but a lack of consistent long-term policies sends a confusing message to business and undermines our attractiveness to investors.
"The Prime Minister should send a clear message that the only way forward is a green economy, and support forward-looking firms that want to build a clean economy.”
