UK new car registrations surge in year to June, but slower growth seen later in the year, says SMMT
New car registrations in June rose 12.9% over the same month last year, marking the 40th month of consecutive growth, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The SMMT said the increase meant sales were up 7% to the highest half-year total on record.
Figures showed 1,376,889 cars were registered between January and June – higher than the previous record of 1,376,565 in the same period in 2004.
SMMT said more buyers are buying British cars, making up the highest proportion of new registrations in five years.
However, looking ahead, it expects the rate of growth to slow later in the year.
“We anticipate a flatter second half of the year as the market finds its natural running rate,” said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes.
