Aldi and Lidl gain further market share in Scotland
Aldi and Lidl's have seen further growth in Scotland, where one tenth of grocery shopping is now done at the German discount stores, new data has revealed.
According to Kantar Worldpanel, during the first quarter of the year, the two retailers accounted for a combined 10.1% of Scottish supermarket spend, the first time they have entered double figures.
The increase is believed to be thanks to the companies' efforts to offer customers local produce.
Mark Thomson, business unit director for Kantar Worldpanel in Scotland, said: "Our data shows that the demographic of an Aldi or Lidl shopper is just as close to the average as Tesco and Morrisons at the moment.
"The customers are coming not just from the £20,000 total household income bracket, but also from the £40,000-plus bracket."
The report also reveal that Aldi has won around £70m from the so-called 'Big Four' supermarkets, Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrison and Asda.
