Paul Reynolds, who was 52 years old and leaves behind a wife and four children, led the company since his appointment to the top role in 2007.
The company's chairman David Kassie has been appointed chief executive with immediate effect.
Reynolds suffered an “unexpected medical emergency", the company had said on Monday, while competing in the Lavaman Waikoloa Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, which consists of a 1,500-metre swim, 40-kilometre bike ride and 10-km run.
Reynolds ran into trouble during the swimming element of the race, according to Canadian daily the Globe & Mail, citing local nurse Lori Cannon, who said Reynolds “called out for help and then went under the water".
He was quickly pulled from the water by safety personnel and brought to shore on a jet ski, where he was given CPR and rushed to hospital.
"This is a difficult day for everyone at Canaccord Genuity," Kassie said. "As the architect of our firm's global transformation, Paul's distinct style of partnership, friendship and respect over three decades of commitment is just part of the legacy he leaves us all.
"On behalf of all employees and the board of directors, I extend our deepest condolences and support to Paul's family and to the many people who came to know him as a colleague, mentor and friend."
Between 1999 and 2007, Reynolds managed Canaccord Genuity's London office as president and chief operating officer of European operations and was named global head of Canaccord Genuity in April 2005.
