Miliband labels Cameron as a "dodgy" PM amid HSBC tax avoidance controversy
Ed Miliband has blasted David Cameron as a "dodgy" prime minister after allegations that the Conservative party's donors are among those embroiled in a tax-avoidance scandal with HSBC.
The comments came amid claims that the Swiss private banking arm of the global lender has aided wealthy customers to avoid or evade tax.
In prime minister's questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday, the Labour leader accused Cameron of being a "dodgy prime minister surrounded by dodgy donors".
Miliband asked Cameron to explain the "revolving door between Tory party HQ and the Swiss branch of HSBC" after The Guardian revealed the Tory donors holding Swiss HSBC accounts have raised over £5m for the party.
Miliband said Cameron is "up to his neck" in the scandal.
However, the PM quickly pointed out that Labour donor Lord Paul, who funded Gordon Brown's election campaign, was also named on the list of names linked to the HSBC tax-avoidance controversy.
"No government has been tougher than this one in chasing down tax evasion and tax avoidance," Cameron said.
