The pair will produce a power gearbox for Rolls Royce’s new UltraFan engine, which the company said will offer at least 25% less fuel burn compared with first generation Rolls Royce Trent engines. Royce Royce said the technology could be used to power aircraft from 2025.
Rolls Royce Aerospace president Tony Wood said the power gearbox is an integral part of the new UltraFan engine design.
Production engineering for the 50/50 joint venture will be located in Friedrichshafen while manufacturing of the components will initially be done in existing Liebherr facilities.
In a statement Rolls Royce says it will continue to lead the design and testing activities for the gearbox.
