This means that your percentage return is greater than the benchmark index (the market).If the market (for example, the FTSE 100) has risen 20% and your strategy has risen by more than 20% over the same time, then you have beat the market. |
Your strategy did not beat the market. Try again This information strip tells you that your strategy has not been successful, and was worse than the general market trend over the same period. For example, if the market was up by 20% but your strategy was only up by 15%, you would see this message. |

The default settings are to test your strategy over 5 years, to update your portfolio on a monthly basis, and to compare your strategy with the FTSE 100. You can change all of these settings and customise your strategy test. For example, you might wish to test over a specific time period, or compare your strategy with a different index such as the FTSE Small Cap. |

Results Gives the number of companies that currently meet your screening criteria.
Performance: % Strategy performance Total cumulative percentage change for your strategy, including dividend payments. This figure shows you how much your strategy has increased (or decreased) over the time that you are running your test.
Note: Total Shareholder return is equal to share price change, plus dividend payments.
% Benchmark performance Equivalent measure for the benchmark, shows how well or poorly the benchmark performed over the same time period. The benchmark is typically an LSE listed index, such as the FTSE 100 or the FTSE AIM 50.
% Performance vs. benchmarkComparative performance of your strategy measured against the benchmark. If the strategy returned 10% and the benchmark returned 5% over the same time period the performance vs. the benchmark would be 5% = performance - benchmark return.
% Avg. performance per period An average of the share price rise or fall over all periods. This demonstrates that if you were investing using this technique what your typical return would have been historically.
% Avg. gain for positive periods Restricts calculations to periods where there was a gain in the share price. For example, if there were two rising companies in a period, Company A and Company B and A rose 5% and B rose 10% the average gain for positive periods is 7.5%
% Avg. loss for negative periods Again, the average performance strictly in negative periods. For example, if there were two falling companies in a period, Company C and Company D and C fell 5% and D fell 10% the average fall for negative periods is 7.5%
