Market overview: Flat finish for FTSE 100
Wednesday 14 May 2008

1630: Footsie ended flat today after a struggle between buoyant miners and a beleaguered banking sector.

Kazakhstan's Eurasian Natural Resources led the way after reporting a very significant increase in group revenue in the first quarter, with good sales volume growth in the Ferroalloys, Iron Ore and Energy divisions.

M&A speculation also lifted miners after BHP Billiton's chief executive Marius Kloppers said he has not ruled out a bid for Rio Tinto. The pair were among the day's top 10 risers, as were fellow miners Vedanta, Kazakhmys and Antofagasta, even as copper prices fell.
