Anglo American faded, having on Tuesday completed the sale of its Foxleigh mine interest, while both falls in Fresnillo and Randgold Resources were due their sensitivity to gold.
At about 16:32 BST, gold was down 0.41% to $1311.1 an ounce, while silver rose 0.36% to $18.74 an ounce and copper added 0.31% to $208.3 a pound.
Three-month prices for copper, aluminium, zinc and tin were all mildly or moderately lower.
BHP Billiton suffered as it was reported that the company was set to strip its chief executive of his annual bonus in the wake of the Samarco dam failure in Brazil.
Against this backdrop, US president Barack Obama is set to press foreign leaders to take action against excess steel capacity at the G-20 Leaders' Summit in China next week, says US Treasury secretary Jack Lew.
Meanwhile to the upside, banks and insurers were prominent, this following on from last Friday's somewhat hawkish round of Fed speakers.
Barclays, Standard Life, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Royal Bank of Scotland and Direct Line were all beneficiaries.
